The Alehouse at the End of the World

Forest Avenue Press is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Stevan Allred’s debut novel, The Alehouse at the End of the World, an epic comedy set in the sixteenth century, slated for publication in November 2018. Stevan’s well-reviewed short story collection, A Simplified Map of the Real World, launched Forest Avenue’s fiction catalog in 2013, and it remains an all-time press bestseller.

The Alehouse at the End of the World is a departure from the author’s small-town Oregon material; it’s set on the Isle of the Dead, which is ruled by a trio of six-foot talking bird gods, including a narcissistic, bullying crow. Bawdy Shakespearian love triangles play out with shapeshifting avian demigods and a fertility goddess, drunken revelry, and bio-dynamic gardening. A raucous, aw-aw-aw-awe-inspiring romp, the novel is a juicy fable for adults and a hopeful tale for our troubled times.

“Stevan writes characters with heart, whether they’re human or avian,” said Publisher Laura Stanfill. “His fans will recognize his literary stylings, his quick wit, and a deliciously intoxicating mash-up of cultural influences. New fans will discover a fantastical, otherworldly, sexy comedy about a small band of heroes trying to rescue the world they know from a tyrant. You’ll want to read this book if only to discover Stevan’s imaginative take on the afterlife.”

A small run of early, coverless galleys of The Alehouse at the End of the World will be available Dec. 1; contact the press for availability. Stevan is a co-teacher at the Pinewood Table, the much-revered writing program he runs with Joanna Rose, and his stories, essays, and poems have appeared in numerous publications and websites.
