Stevan Allred at PageTurners

Stevan Allred’s linked short story collection, A Simplified Map of the Real World, has been the talk of Portland this fall… or at least at Multnomah County Library’s PageTurners book club.

Stevan was selected to do author visits at ten libraries, and Inverness Jail, and he has met many readers, all of them eager to talk about his fifteen stories, the themes, the overlaps between the characters and the stories, and the stories behind the stories.

Five more book club meetings remain, so please consider attending, especially if you’ve read the book and want to hear a fantastic literary discussion about A Simplified Map of the Real World:

6:30 p.m., Oct. 8, at the Belmont Library

6:30 p.m., Oct. 13, at the Troutdale Library

6:30 p.m., Oct. 16, at the Hollywood Library

10:30 a.m., Oct. 18, at the Holgate Library

2 p.m., Nov. 6, at the Gresham Library

The full schedule of appearances is available here.

Here are some photos of three of the appearances, plus Stevan with a bookmark promoting all the events.

  1. Of the many joys the publication of this book has brought me, the Multnomah Library book groups rank very near the top. These readers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They let me know how my stories have touched them. They make real the promise of literature–that the specific leads to the universal, and connects all of us with our own humanity. My book belongs to the world now, and hearing the reactions of readers, and their unique interpretations of my stories, is truly a pleasure. My thanks to the Library for choosing me, and to the readers for reading me, and to Laura for publishing me.
